A virtual learning event on Business Planning for Small Scale Water Service Providers took place on 10 June 2021. The activity was a joint undertaking of PhilCapnet, the Philippine Water Partnership (PWP), the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) and the National Water and Sanitation Association (NAWASA) of the Philippines. It was attended by forty six (46) participants representing water cooperatives, water associations, private SSWSPs, as well as representatives from national government agencies and NGOs.
The Opening Remarks of Ms. Elsa Mejia, NAWASA President, stressed that for SSWSPs, a climate- resilient business plan will serve as their “bible”, guiding them on how to effectively operate given the impacts of a changing climate regime. NWRB Director Sevillo David, Jr emphasized the importance of regular dialogue for the growth and improvement of SSWSPs. Dr. Chil Soriano, PhilCapNet President, presented the objectives of the learning event stressing the role of capacity building to help improve water governance.
The event was successful in putting across the importance of climate-resilient business planning. Resource persons shared valuable experiences in business planning for SSWSPs, vulnerability assessments as a tool for understanding and preparing for the impacts of climate change, and low-cost sanitation and technology options for SSWSPS.
SSWSPs were encouraged to include climate resiliency measures in their operating and capital expenditures in a cost-effective manner so that they may continue to operate even in extreme weather conditions.
